8 Things That Make a Mom a Supermom

Where would the world be without moms?  (Firstly, probably not far, as we definitely need them on a biological level) but more importantly they shape the world as we know it, by shaping us. With us from the moment of birth, our mothers play a huge role in helping us discover, experience and interact with the world. They are our first teachers, our wisest advisors and our strongest supporters. Whether stay-at-home or working, mothers have the hardest job in the whole world and they manage to take all of life’s difficulties in their stride, whilst still providing a home and sanctuary for us as children (and adults). We might not be kids anymore, but they never stop being our mom and here are just a few reasons why we think they are total superheroes:

1: Her listening powers

  • No one listens to your problems like your Mother, right? This might also be because no one else would put up with the sheer amount, but she definitely listens like no one else does. From your first fight in the school playground to a difficult boss who drives you crazy, she is always the one you turn to and she is always there with a shoulder to cry on and ears to vent to. Good thing you guys have that ‘secret vault’ right?!

2: Her organizational powers

  • Even when we reach adulthood, it is still possible to believe your Mother has secret superpowers. How is it that she manages to know the exact location of everything from throughout your life and you can’t find that top you bought last week? How is it that she can whip up delicious treats for guests with 10 minutes’ notice and you still struggle not to mess up microwave meals?

3: Her wisdom powers

  • How is it that only your Mother will always know exactly the right thing to say in any situation? The best advice always comes from your mom. Even when you grow up and have kids of your own, it’s hard to imagine coping without being able to call her so she can talk you off the ledge when you think your baby is sick, or reassure you about a discipline strategy when they are bad!

4: Her caring powers

  • True or false? No matter how old you are, when you get sick there is one person you want? You might not say it out loud, but when we feel ill, we all just want our moms. (Technically you shouldn’t beat yourself up about this as it’s pretty much a biological thing). This is also because of her immense capacity for caring. Whether for you, your siblings, your father, extended family or even strangers she meets on the street, she appears to have the biggest heart and always knows exactly what to do and say to make you feel better.

5: Her forgiveness powers

  • Okay, so there is kind of a big difference between getting purple crayon all over freshly painted walls and crashing a new car, but it is still very possible, at any age, to need your Mother’s forgiveness. Luckily for us, she seems to have an endless supply of it. As we get older her graciousness extends to us forgetting to call or visit enough and luckily she understands that it doesn’t mean we love her any less. She knows when to punish (and how to punish) and when to understand, which makes her pretty priceless.

6: Her comedy powers

  • It might be a very unique brand of comedy, and mostly completely unintentional, but there are few people who can make us laugh like our moms. From her poorly conceived or miss-remembered mom jokes when you are a teenager, to her valiant attempts to embrace new technologies in order to stay in touch with adult you, which often have hilarious (think auto-correct) outcomes. You know how you used to tell me to think before I spoke? Mom, you need to read before you send!

7: Her inspiration powers

  • Moms come in many forms, some are working mothers who dominate the corporate world, save lives or guide others. Some are stay-at-home mothers who manage to juggle 20 different careers as chief cleaner, driver, chef, counsellor, etc. It doesn’t really matter which one you have, they are undoubtedly your biggest inspiration in life. They will have taught you patience and understanding, determination and ambition, love and compassion. They will have helped you discover what is most important about life and which path is the right one for you.

8: Her ‘believing’ powers

  • No one will ever believe in you like your mom. No one will cheer as loud for you or support your childhood dream to be ruler of the world. Even when we mess up again and again, she is the one who sees the potential we have inside and encourages us to keep trying. She knows that even when we fail, we learn and she knows that you were meant to change the world in some way.  She can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Thank you so much for being you, mom. We couldn’t live without you.
