The Story behind Mother’s Day

The Middle Eastern Mother’s Day holds a really nice story. It all started from Egypt when the journalist Moustafa Amin in his daily column “Idea” in Akhbar El Youm journal raised the idea of celebrating a day honoring all the mothers.

A little while after Amin’s idea, a widowed mother visited his office and told him how she devoted her whole life to raising her son until he became a doctor. The son then got married and left her without showing any gratitude. Upon hearing this, Amin became motivated to promote for “Mother’s Day” idea again. This time, he received a lot of letters from people encouraging him and his idea of celebrating Mother’s Day. The idea was first ridiculed by president Gamal Abdel Nasser but he later accepted it and Mother’s Day was first celebrated on 21 March 1956. The practice has since been copied by many other Arab countries from Bahrain to the United Arab Emirates to Iraq.
