Sonora Smart Dodd is the woman who started it back then during a sermon celebrating Mother’s Day when she hoped to celebrate her father –a civil war veteran and a single parent- the same way mothers are celebrated on Mother’s day. She petitioned for a day before Spokane Ministerial Alliance of Washington where fathers are honored with sermons and celebrations and it was successful. The first Father’s Day Sermon was held on June 19th on Sunday. Other pastors in nearby churches started to follow the new tradition of Father’s Day sermons which made Dodd happy for receiving hundreds of letters appreciating her efforts.
Father’s Day celebrations then went viral with clothing manufacturers and gift shops hoping to profit from the new occasion. In 1666, 56 after Dodd’s first celebration, President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first proclamation calling for the recognition of Father’s Day every third Sunday in June.
Father’s Day didn’t go official until 1972 when President Richard Nixon announced it. The President called upon all the governments building to raise the flag in celebration of the day. Sonora Smart Dodd the official founder of Father’s Day died six years later after making her dream occasion come true. As of today, there is an estimate of 110 countries worldwide celebrate Father’s Day in June.
